Magnesium

Magnesium (Mg) is a lightweight, silvery-white metal that is the eighth most abundant element in the Earth’s crust. It is primarily extracted from magnesite (MgCO₃), dolomite (CaMg(CO₃)₂), seawater, and brines. Magnesium is widely used in aerospace, automotive, construction, and medicine due to its high strength-to-weight ratio.

Composition of Magnesium Ores

1. Magnesite (MgCO₃) – Primary Ore

ComponentPercentage (%)
Magnesium Oxide (MgO)40 – 50%
Calcium Oxide (CaO)1 – 5%
Silica (SiO₂)0.5 – 5%
Iron Oxide (Fe₂O₃)0.1 – 2%
Moisture0.5 – 3%

2. Dolomite (CaMg(CO₃)₂) – Secondary Ore

ComponentPercentage (%)
Magnesium Oxide (MgO)18 – 22%
Calcium Oxide (CaO)30 – 34%
Silica (SiO₂)1 – 5%
Iron Oxide (Fe₂O₃)0.1 – 1%
Moisture0.5 – 3%

3. Seawater & Brines

  • Seawater contains about 1,300 ppm (parts per million) of magnesium.
  • Magnesium is extracted via precipitation using lime (CaO) or electrolysis.
