Magnesium
Magnesium (Mg) is a lightweight, silvery-white metal that is the eighth most abundant element in the Earth’s crust. It is primarily extracted from magnesite (MgCO₃), dolomite (CaMg(CO₃)₂), seawater, and brines. Magnesium is widely used in aerospace, automotive, construction, and medicine due to its high strength-to-weight ratio.

Composition of Magnesium Ores
1. Magnesite (MgCO₃) – Primary Ore
| Component | Percentage (%) |
|---|---|
| Magnesium Oxide (MgO) | 40 – 50% |
| Calcium Oxide (CaO) | 1 – 5% |
| Silica (SiO₂) | 0.5 – 5% |
| Iron Oxide (Fe₂O₃) | 0.1 – 2% |
| Moisture | 0.5 – 3% |
2. Dolomite (CaMg(CO₃)₂) – Secondary Ore
| Component | Percentage (%) |
|---|---|
| Magnesium Oxide (MgO) | 18 – 22% |
| Calcium Oxide (CaO) | 30 – 34% |
| Silica (SiO₂) | 1 – 5% |
| Iron Oxide (Fe₂O₃) | 0.1 – 1% |
| Moisture | 0.5 – 3% |
3. Seawater & Brines
- Seawater contains about 1,300 ppm (parts per million) of magnesium.
- Magnesium is extracted via precipitation using lime (CaO) or electrolysis.
