Bauxite Ore
Bauxite is the primary ore of aluminum (Al) and is composed mainly of aluminum hydroxides, iron oxides, and silica. It is processed into alumina (Al₂O₃), which is then refined into aluminum metal through the Hall-Héroult process.

Composition of Bauxite Ore
| Component | Percentage (%) |
|---|---|
| Alumina (Al₂O₃) | 30 – 60% |
| Silica (SiO₂) | 1 – 10% |
| Iron Oxides (Fe₂O₃, FeO) | 1 – 25% |
| Titanium Dioxide (TiO₂) | 0.5 – 4% |
| Moisture | 10 – 30% |
- High-grade bauxite contains >50% Al₂O₃ and is ideal for aluminum production.
- Low-grade bauxite may require beneficiation (removal of impurities).
Types of Bauxite Ore
- Gibbsite (Al(OH)₃) – High in alumina, low in silica, easy to refine.
- Boehmite (γ-AlO(OH)) – Requires higher temperatures for alumina extraction.
- Diaspore (α-AlO(OH)) – Harder and more difficult to refine than gibbsite.
