COAL (ALL TYPES)
Coal mining is the process of extracting coal from the earth for use in energy production, industrial applications, and metallurgy. It has been a key source of energy for centuries and remains important despite the rise of renewable energy sources.

Types of Coal
Coal is classified based on its carbon content, energy value, and moisture levels. The main types include:
Anthracite
- Highest carbon content (86-97%)
- Hard, shiny, and burns with little smoke
- High energy content (the most efficient coal)
- Used for heating and metallurgy
Bituminous Coal
- Moderate carbon content (45-86%)
- Soft, black, and commonly used for electricity generation
- Produces more smoke and soot compared to anthracite
- Used in power plants and steel production
Sub-bituminous Coal
- Lower carbon content (35-45%)
- Higher moisture content
- Produces less energy compared to bituminous coal
- Commonly used for electricity generation
Lignite (Brown Coal)
- Lowest carbon content (25-35%)
- High moisture content, making it less efficient
- Soft and crumbly, mainly used in power plants
- Found in large quantities but less energy-dense
Types of Coal
Coal is extracted using different mining methods depending on the depth and location of the coal seam.
Surface Mining (Opencast Mining)
- Used when coal is near the surface
- Involves removing soil and rock layers to expose coal
- Types:
- Strip Mining: Removes large strips of earth to access coal
- Open-pit Mining: A large excavation pit is created
- Mountaintop Removal: Entire mountaintops are removed to expose coal seams
Underground Mining (Deep Mining)
- Used when coal is buried deep underground
- Requires tunnels and shafts to extract coal
- Types:
- Room and Pillar Mining: Leaves coal pillars to support the roof
- Longwall Mining: Uses a mechanical shearer to cut coal in long panels
Auger Mining
- Used on steep terrains or abandoned surface mines
- A drill extracts coal from horizontal seams
Highwall Mining
- A continuous mining machine extracts coal from exposed seams along a highwall
Drift, Slope, and Shaft Mining (Types of underground mining based on entry method)
- Drift Mining: Horizontal tunnels dug into a coal seam from a hillside
- Slope Mining: A sloping tunnel used to access coal
- Shaft Mining: Vertical shafts dug deep underground
